Student Visa Requirements for New Zealand (Updated for 2024-25)
The New Zealand Government provides Indian students the opportunity to study in the country, but obtaining a student visa is mandatory. The type of visa required depends on the duration and type of study.
1. Types of Student Visas:
- Fee-Paying Student Visa (Most Common): For full-time study lasting more than 3 months.
- Pathway Student Visa: Allows students to take up to 3 consecutive courses on a single visa.
- Exchange Student Visa: For students enrolled in approved exchange programs.
2. Key Visa Requirements:
- Offer of Place: Must have an acceptance letter from a recognized New Zealand education provider.
- Proof of Financial Capacity:
- At least NZD 20,000 per year for living expenses (or NZD 17,000 for shorter courses).
- Additional funds if bringing dependents.
- English Language Proficiency: IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE scores depending on the course requirements.
- Medical & Travel Insurance: Must have approved health coverage for the duration of the stay.
- Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) Criteria: You must prove that your primary intention is to study.
Work Rights for Students in New Zealand (2024-25 Updates)
- During Study:
- Can work up to 20 hours per week during term time.
- Can work full-time (40 hours per week) during scheduled holidays.
- Post-Study Work Visa (Stay Back Option):
- Level 7 Bachelor’s Degree or higher: Up to 3 years of post-study work rights.
- Diploma Level 4-6 Graduates: Up to 2 years, if studied in a skill shortage area.
