How to deal with CULTURE SHOCK
Cultural shock is the personal disorientation towards new and unfamiliar surroundings. It is a normal reaction. When students encounter something different while living far away from their cultural and social environment, they often undergo cultural shock.
Sometimes the challenges can become a bit overwhelming, and they may experience symptoms like homesickness, boredom, loneliness, and even anger. So what to do when a cultural shock hits YOU hard, and you feel homesick? Well, this post will provide you with some useful pointers.
- It’s completely normal
Always remember that cultural shock is not a sign that anything is wrong. You might feel insecure due to different climate, values, attitudes, lifestyle, political and religious beliefs.
- Make your own space
Personal belongings like your cushion or a framed picture of your family can make a big difference to your personal space and help you feel at home quickly.
- Keep an open mind
Welcome the surprising experiences as they arise. Commit to saying “YES” as much as possible. Accept invitations to events, try different cuisines, make out new friends. Be safe and not push yourself too hard.
- Explore
Feel free to ride around the city and live the tourist life by visiting a new place every week.
